Take a look behind the scenes of any modern rock band or classical orchestra and I bet you'll find a Yamaha product used somewhere, either in the generation of the sound or in the recording process itself. This tells us 2 things - firstly, Yamaha make a vast array of musical instruments and secondly, the Yamaha Music Group is an extremely powerful, proactive organisation. As music and Home Cinema fans, these 2 facts are very important to us, because with that wealth of experience, Yamaha ought to know how things 'should' sound, plus the Yamaha Music Group has just taken over the distribution of all Yamaha audio products. This last development is very exciting, because Yamaha Music don't mess about and have already made some very significant changes, which may well have a major influence on the Home Cinema market this season. What they've done is to take a look at the new Yamaha amplifier range, decide which models are strongest, then slash their price to a point where they should dominate the marketplace. This is particularly true of the AX863SE, which looked pretty good at £799, but is now a very strong proposition at £599. This amp is only available in black and doesn't have a built in radio, but what is does have is 3 HDMI 1.3 inputs, a genuine 105 watts per channel, 1080p upscaling and full blooded Yamaha sound. It's early days yet, but the 863 looks destined to be one of the bigger selling amps of the season

However in doing so, we rather overlooked its baby brother, the TX-SR506. This is a great time of the year for smart Home Cinema buyers, because all the major manufacturers introduce new products, which means that there are often amazing bargains to be had on outgoing models. Sometimes the new releases offer genuine leaps in performance, but these days specifications are so high, that new models are usually just slightly tweaked versions of the old model. That's exactly the case with the Yamaha RX-V3800. This amp is due to be replaced by the 3900 in the next couple of months, so you can now buy the outgoing 3800 for just £799 - saving you a massive £600. The new 3900 will sport twin HDMI outputs and is available in black, but otherwise it looks remarkably similar to the outgoing 3800. The word on the street is that the RRP of the new 3900 will be £1399, the same as the RRP was on the 3800. This means that for many customers, the 3900 represents no real-world improvement when compared to the outgoing model. Just £799 gets you an amp that sold well at £1399, thanks to its flagship specification, which includes 4 x HDMI 1.3 inputs and 1 output, full 1080p upscaling, 7 x 140 watt output, wired network facility, front USB port, bi-amping facility etc etc. On top of that you get full iPod connectivity, and Yamaha's legendary build quality / reliability (this amp has a gorgeous titanium front panel and weighs over 3 stone).
