The Compaq iPAQ doesn't have built-in expansion sockets but with the CF Card Expansion Jacket you can plug in any CompactFlash card. Rather than tying you to a single type of expansion slot, the iPAQ stays slim and sleek by having a special connector on the base that lets you add different jackets, depending what you want to plug in. They wrap neatly around the iPAQ and the CF jacket doesn't make the iPAQ much thicker. You'll mostly see CompactFlash cards with extra memory (from 4MB and up) but you can also get hard drives, SmartMedia adaptors, 56K modems, GSM modems, network cards, wireless Ethernet cards, digital cameras and even barcode readers in the CompactFlash format. Because the CompactFlash standard is based on the PC Card, it's often easy for manufacturers to bring out CompactFlash versions of existing PC Card devices so we'll see more and more CompactFlash devices coming out.
What the CF jacket doesn't have is a second battery, but CompactFlash memory cards don't use up a great deal of power so you won't find your iPAQ running out of batteries much sooner. If you're using a wireless card or a hard drive that will use up the batteries and if you have an IBM MicroDrive with a PC Card adaptor, you might prefer to get the CompaqPC Card Expansion Jacket instead, because that has a second battery pack.
Without expansion, the iPAQ is desirable but not as powerful as it could be. If you want to do everything you can with Pocket PC, the CF Jacket lets you plug in more memory or a variety of other extras, without making your iPAQ too big and bulky.--Mary Branscombe
