The Sony Clié SL10 combines the best features that every Palm OS 4 PDA offers with a range of Sony extras, to provide a superb contender in the entry-level PDA category.Sony's extras include a Memory Stick slot which means you can augment the 8 MB RAM, and a 320 x 320 pixel screen. Even on the SL10's greyscale display this is obviously a fine feature. There is also a reasonable bundle of free software from Sony including picture editing, image viewing and drawing tools. Sony steers clear of providing its more advanced freebies like its MP3 player. This is probably a good thing, as the relatively slow 33 MHz Dragonball processor and AAA batteries may not be up to servicing such applications.
You could also call the overall hardware design a Sony extra. This entire device is tiny--on three sides there is hardly space around the edges of the display for any casing, and the space beneath it which houses tiny versions of application shortcut buttons is far smaller than usual. The built in flip over lid provides screen protection, so there is no need to add bulk with a case. Sony finds room for its trademark jog dial wheel on the SL10's left side, and there is infrared provision for beaming this and that to other users. Power is provided by replaceable rather than rechargeable batteries so it is essential to keep a spare set.
The SL10 could find itself becoming popular among those who've thought about a PDA but are put off by the prices. --Sandra Vogel

The Clie PEG-SN770C is Sony's second European PDA, and it is a great advance on the first, the PEG-S300. This new device has a colour display capable of an impressive 65 thousand colours, and is powered by a Dragonball processor running at 33 MHz. It runs Palm OS version 4, the latest variant of the operating system. While the changes from version 3.5 are in many cases fairly cosmetic, this is the first non-Palm device to hit the UK that runs OS 4, which is something of a coup.The Clie PEG-SN770C has a super jog dial button which allows for one handed navigation around applications, reducing the need for the stylus in many instances. It is supplemented by a Back button for de-selecting, and a Hold button, which allows you to turn off the screen while listening to music, thus saving on batteries. As far as music is concerned, you get an application called Audio Player, which plays MP3 files, and a rather snazzy set of remote-control headphones. Other provided software includes gMovie for watching videos and PictureGear Pocket for viewing stills. Data for use in these applications can be stored in the internal 8 MB of RAM, or on a Memory Stick.
All this use of multimedia, and driving the colour screen, is quite a battery drain, but Sony says the Lithium Ion cell is good for 15 days between charges which is the same as Palm quotes for its colour m505 device. You get a mains adaptor as well as the USB docking station for recharging.
The Clie PEG-SN770C is an extremely impressive PDA. Its multimedia functions are strong, its colour display is state of the art, and its hardware design and flip-over screen protector very eye catching. This screen cover is designed to be detachable, though in some instances it was a bit too detachable and would come free from its mounting when left in your bag or case. If you can live with this and a relatively short battery life, this is definitely a PDA worth considering.--Sandra Vogel

Having already dipped its toe into the ocean that is the PDA market with the PEG-SN770C and the PEG-S300 models, Sony has now jumped in with a second-generation colour model, the PEG-T625C. Featuring the same 33MHz Dragonball processor, high-resolution 320x320 colour screen and jog wheel functionality, it boasts 16MB of internal RAM, the latest version of the Palm OS (v. 4.1) and a super-slim aluminium body.Very similar in design to Sony's previous colour model, the PEG-T625C features the same jog dial button, allowing for easy one-handed navigation around applications. The scroll buttons have been replaced with a tiny rocker switch, which isn't as good as the original buttons. The memory stick slot has been retained allowing for increased expandability. Battery life runs at about 15 days before a re-charge is required. However, this does depend entirely on how much you use the PDA. The stand-out feature has to be the high resolution screen--the images are sharp and detailed, while the text is super-smooth. It makes other PDA displays look positively archaic.
The PEG-T625C has lots of little pluses that make it stand out from the rest. It sits in the cradle nicely and it doesn't make a horrible crunching sound when it's removed--unlike some PDAs. CLIÉ specific applications such as the AV Remote Commander, World Alarm--that allows you to use your own sound files, Sound Utility and CLIÉ Paint are fun to play around with. While those of you wanting to do some serious work will be pleased with Documents to Go and Intellisync Lite. The latest version of the Palm OS includes easier data entry and enhanced security and mobile connectivity.
The PEG-T625C is probably the best Palm OS-based PDA on the market at the moment. With its bright, high-resolution colour screen, superior sound quality and super sleek body, it looks and sounds like the bee's knees. However, the flip-over screen protector does have a tendency to detach from the unit and the re-designed scroll button is completely unusable. But in all, it's the sexiest looking PDA out there and has style written all over it. Worth considering if you want a PDA that is both functional and stylish.--Martin Snelling
